Bianca, a marriageable young lady from a good family in Renaissance Italy is promised to Giovanni, a young, rich merchant. The marriage is agreeable, but Bianca can't hide her disappointment at having to wed a man she barely knows. Then she learns a new secret that opens up her world: her family is in possession of a costume (of sorts) known as a "man's skin". By putting it on, Bianca can become "Lorenzo" and benefit from the freedom afforded a young man of astonishing beauty. She can experience the world of men incognito and get to know her fiancé in his natural habitat.
